You know, it's kinda funny how much of high fantasy centers around kings and nobility and courtly intrigue considering that the archetypal high fantasy, Lord of the Rings, had the rather explicit moral of "saving the world is up to this backwater hick and his gardener because no politician, least of all inherited nobility, would have the ability to see past their own ambition and throw away a weapon". Oh sure, Aragorn is a great king and all, but there's a reason he's over there running a distraction ring while the hobbits do the real work. Sauron loses because he gets distracted by kings and armies and great battles (i.e. typical high fantasy stuff) letting Frodo and Sam sneak through his back door and blow it all to hell.

Just saying, maybe old Jirt knew what he was saying when he said that the small folk doing their best and holding to each other was more powerful than a dozen alliances and superweapons and we should respect him for it.

A tweet by Nintendo Life captioned "Random: Japanese Parents Are Using Pikmin To Keep Their Children In Line". It is accompanied by a cropped image of the Pikmin 4 box art to show the Blue Pikmin, Yellow Pikmin, Red Pikmin, and Crystal Pikmin.ALT
A reddit post titled "Pikmin 4 changed improved my life and I fucking hate it". The post reads: "Every single time I have something that needs doing that I don’t want to do I just think to myself, “Dandori issue.” Every single time. And it works. Every. Single. Time. The only way I get so much done now is by dreaming of being one of these weird little plant guys. How do I explain that to my parents? My friends, even?! How do I tell them that my sudden drastic increase in productivity is from getting over my Dandori issue?? I just want to go back I don’t want to be a pikmin anymore. I don’t want to hear their little carrying song when I take my laundry out of the machine. How do I unplay pikmin."ALT

This is actually very normal human behavior. It's just that most people (in the USA) think "Jesus strengthens me" instead of "I am a pikmin, dandori time"

sunspotpony

This is literally why stories and fantasy are so useful to humans. We cannot tackle every mundane challenge with enthusiasm, and facing against profoundly daunting tasks can be deeply demoralizing, and you don’t get to feel cool or heroic for filing 400 pieces of paperwork.

We arm ourselves with stories and fantasy, so that the laundry can become a charming hurdle to overcome, and the daunting stack of bills is the leviathan we the brave knights must slay.

Humans have always been like this. So many cultures have stories or mythology or even rituals about literally embodying another being better suited to the challenge one currently faces.

Stories are armor. Stories are fuel.

Sweet. Burn that stupid "Zeus is her dad" stuff to the ground. And never mention her "secret twin brother who is actually her superior in every way who then disappears into space because the editors realised that he kind of messes with Diana's whole deal" ever again.

YASSSSSSSSS

SO GLAD that "Daughter of Zeus" nonsense has been retconned away

All the damage the New 52 did to Diana and the Amazons has finally been completely removed from the character <3

DIANA DOESN'T NEED A FATHER

SHE HAS A THOUSAND MOTHERS

(paraphrased from Gail Simone)

espanolbot2

Brian Azzarello (writer of the 52 WW run which introduced the Zeus retcon) reportedly said that he went with this approach because "everyone has a father, even if they're not a very good one", despite this not being true for a number of folk IRL, let alone a fictional character who was created by the Ancient Greek pantheon and stuff.

Honestly? Baffling choices all around in that book, with every female character who wasn't Diana or the most recent person Zeus impregnated being shown to be varying degrees of horrible, her supporting cast replace almost entirely with her newly discovered half-brothers, and for Ares (typically her archenemy) becoming her main mentor and parental figure in her backstory, who notably in this version looks oddly similar to Brian, for reasons.

I don't know, kind of feels like Brian wants to lecture the character in various ways about how she's wrong in a way that feels like the time Bill Willingham decided to halt his Robin run to lecture Tim Drake/the audience on how awesome the United States army is, with a stand-in for Captain America attempting to recruit him while Bruce begrudgingly admits that the guy is indeed a mega-chad or something.

locuas642

Even if one wanted to go with that angle (which I dont think you need) Zeus is probably the most overdone option for that. He is simply not an interesting idea to follow. So much so that Percy Jackson went out of it's way to specifically avoid by Giving Percy a different God Dad to have Daddy Issues with.

Interestingly, there is a male god whom you could give the role of a "father" figure for Diana (you know, if you must), and that's... Hermes.

So many people constantly saying the landscape for voice actors is better and more equal now literally have no idea what they are talking about.

It is still a constant fight for people to even be allowed to voice characters that represent them in media.

There are, absolutely, more instances of people being able to play characters that represent them than ever before.

But at the same time all the most popular characters that are seen as representative of varieties of different people are still often not voiced by the people they are supposed to represent.

It's so frustrating.

Who wants to hear a story about how stupid I am

aeternium

Isnt that why we’re on this website

derinthescarletpescatarian

Every single time I hear someone reference Madonna as still being alive (like when they mention her Tumblr or Instagram), my brain immediately goes, “wait, no. Madonna is very definitely dead.” Like, I am CERTAIN that Madonna is dead. It’s a rock solid fact of my existence, there’s simply no way she’s alive, that’s “proof you’ve woken up in a parallel universe” kind of shit.

Madonna is not dead. But I keep forgetting that, and being dead certain that she is. I remember watching documentaries about her, about her history of being abused at home and in the industry, about her courage and skill and how she was taken advantage of, about what an iconic actress she was. I remember the outrage when that Playboy jerk got buried next to her as “the ultimate blonde”.

Now, people more astute than me might have noticed that I have confused Madonna with Marilyn Monroe. I usually don’t get this far in the proceedings. I usually go, “oh, I must be confusing her with someone else. Who is it… oh, Marilyn! It’s the M’s that must be tripping me up!

I’ve confused Madonna with Marilyn Manson!”

kaylapocalypse

Who is also still alive, though I genuinely wish he wasn’t.

derinthescarletpescatarian

I was confused by this reaction so I googled Marilyn Manson and it turns out I have also confused Marilyn Manson with Eddie Izzard.

scrumptiousangst

How many celebrity victims with this identity trolly claim before you find someone actually dead?

derinthescarletpescatarian

#I get those two confused too 😭#also. this is a safe space so I will ask#is marilyn manson not a serial killer

WHEN I REALISED MY MARILYN MONROE MISTAKE I ALSO THOUGHT THIS but no apparently he is a singer and I don’t know what the serial killer’s name is

I fully believe Irene Norton never thinks about Sherlock Holmes after the events of ASIB ever again. Why would she? To her, he’s literally just some guy who was kind of annoying once. she’s living her best life!!!!!

ani-tolaat-bli-toelet

One day her friends from the opera randomly go "hey did you know you're in the latest Strand?" and she flips through the newspaper and goes oh, it's these guys that threw a smoke bomb into my house once. Cool I guess

So, since apparently I’m in a DC posting mood right now, you all want to hear this concept that’s been baking in my mind for a while now?

Stephanie Brown is the same level of crimefighter as Bruce Wayne. Hear me out.

First, a common thematic reading of the Batfamily, especially the Batkids, is that all of them are in some way better than Bruce at one specific thing. Like with the equally broad thematic reading of ‘All of Batman’s rogues reflect a part of his psyche’ this doesn’t entirely hold up to scrutiny and doesn’t apply to all of the Batkids, but it applies to enough: Dick is the better leader, Babs is the better strategist, Tim is the better detective, Cass is the better fighter, you get the idea. Now, normally when considering this reading the consensus for Steph is that she is the negative archetype, similar to how the Joker is interpreted in the rogues reading - an inverse of the common rule, in this case meaning that Steph isn’t particularly good at anything. Some people who take this reading end this part with 'And that’s why I love her!’ - most don’t. But I think that’s entirely wrong, and to explain why we need to examine Bruce’s own past.

In most versions of the Batman origin, there’s a period, usually immediately or closely after Bruce graduating from either high-school or college, where Bruce travels the world, seeking masters of specific disciplines and learning all he can from them. The amount of people he meets is extensive - seriously, I have a word doc of 40 names and that’s not even all of them - and later stories, particularly the Nolan trilogy, Batman/The Shadow, and IIRC Batman: Earth One, try to par that down to a single entity - The League of Shadows, The Shadow, and Alfred, respectively - teaching him all that is necessary to become Batman. It’s not a change I particularly like, for one simple reason - the trek around the globe is as much metatexual as it is backstory. Like many of the prototypical superheroes, Batman isn’t just one thing, he’s many influences that Bill Finger brought to the table when creating him - he’s a pulp hero like the Shadow, an adventure swashbuckler like Zorro and the Scarlet Pimpernel, a detective like Sherlock Holmes, all melding together to form our concept of 'Batman’. Having him learn from all these disparate sources - from ninjas and car thieves and magicians and detectives - seems like a way of acknowledging that breadth of influence, and I can’t help but feel like limiting it to only Ra’s or Lamont or Alfred takes away from that.

So, what does all that have to do with Stephanie Brown? Well, think about it - almost all of the Batfamily have only one real mentor - there are exceptions, like Tim basically becoming Babs’ apprentice in No Man’s Land and Cass’ very funny shared custody situation, but mainly all of the Batkids learn from Batman, and what they excel at they were just kind of naturally good at anyway - Babs and Cass especially, no shade. With Steph, though? It’s not as impressive as Bruce’s list, but she learns general Cowl skills with Bruce, hacking and cryptography with Babs, detective skills with Tim, get fighting tips from Cass and Black Canary, is taught teamwork by Kate, evasion skills with Damian (that last one may not be purposeful), plus whatever else she can learn because, unlike the rest of the Batfamily, at least Pre-Flashpoint Steph was always learning.

True, Steph started out with very few practical skills in crimefighting, but you know who else did that? Bruce - every single time a comic or adaptation has shown him attempting to fight crime before the training trek has him absolutely suck at it. At the very least Steph never decided to stop her dad by attempting to assassinate him in a courthouse full of witnesses by veeery slowly pointing a gun at him, like Nolanverse Bruce.

Bottom line? If one more person says Steph 'isn’t particularly skilled at anything’, I will chew glass.

batman bruce wayne spoiler stephanie brown dc comics feels weird to be back another thing to consider is that Steph shares the honour with Babs and maybe Duke of being the only Batkid to not need Bruce's encouragement to be a crimefighter Like most of the rest of them would happily have gone on committing ~*crimes*~ (this is not a criticism - ACAB fuck the police etc.) (Also Cass and Jason definitely have extenuating circumstances) it's just notable that Steph is one of the ones to make the exact same decision Bruce made 'Something must be done and I can do it so I must' for honestly the same reason - a lack of parents through crime tearing her family apart idk that's interesting

just to be completely clear, the amount of military power and political influence Israel has has NOTHING to do with its settlers being Jewish. Israel is a force for American & European interests in the region and they're just doing what America does and allows/encourages its close allies to do.

war crimes aren't considered war crimes when someone America finds useful is doing them. european and american pushback against anyone criticizing Israeli apartheid & genocide is 100% because these crimes are useful to American & European hegemony.

Governments that are deeply antisemitic, like France, aren't suddenly caring about Jewish people. Jewish people, persecuted the world over, don't hold some kind of hegemonic power outside of Israel.

The state of Israel and its attendant brutal treatment of the locals are both incredibly useful to the US, and American hegemony means we're expected to celebrate both.

not bc they're Jewish. this isn't a break in the pattern of western antisemitism and it's not evidence that antisemitism doesn't exist.

it's just like how you could get fired for saying shit against the US war in Afghanistan when i was growing up. it is 100% about US military and political interests (ok slightly western europe too but lbr)

haltraveler

This is exactly it. Israel doesn't control the US, the US uses Israel as a military outpost in the Middle East and doesn't care who it has to hurt to keep it that way.
